An especially complicated energy environment is that of Lebanon, a country whose energy infrastructure has been severely damaged by a 30-year civil war and which has still not recovered. In particular, the only licensed electricity generation company – the state-owned Electricite du Liban (EDL) - is unable to provide continuous power supply to its residents, businesses and manufacturing industries.
A compromise – heavy fuel oil and diesel driven on-site power generation severely damage air quality and people’s health, let alone comfort. On certain days when there is no wind, the air is unbreathable and people remain completely blocked.
Energy without emissions
When you read energy without emissions, you are probably thinking of renewable energy such as wind, solar, hydro or biomass. Yet, very few people think of the freely available waste heat from the large number of generators (also known as gensets) available all around North Africa and Middle East.
The gensets consume fuel to generate electricity and in this process they heat up. This is heat is usually just dissipated in the environment. Yet, engineers know that it can be captured and delivered as useful energy.
Heating, cooling or electricity
Once you capture that heat, you have a choice what to do with it. It can remain thermal energy for building heating or can be made into steam for industrial processes which needed it – think of textile, breweries, dairy farms, etc. It can be also transformed into cooling for industrial processes – think plastic factories, chemical and pharmaceutical, and many other – or can be used for air-conditioning of buildings. Yet another option, this free waste heat can be even transformed into electric energy.
Numbers speak louder than words
According to the recently issued First Energy Indicators Report, the industrial sector in North Africa and Middle East consisted of more than 4,000 factories distributed over more than 20 sub-sectors in the report’s baseline period (year 2010, data collected in 2015). The thermal energy they consumed in that period accounted for around 23% of all energy, equivalent to more than 4,200 GWh.
Normally thermal energy is provided through boilers which consume fuel and produce pollutant emissions too. Since all industries have generators for their electricity needs, boilers can be stopped and kept for back-up. Almost all the needed thermal energy can come from the clean energy source of recovered waste heat from the gensets.
How waste heat is captured
